Estimate your coil spring rate

Compare a manufacturer-method starting rate with a sag-based estimate. Enter your riding weight with gear, rear wheel travel, shock stroke and target shock sag.

Fine-tune the estimate

We assume 60% of your riding weight is supported at the rear. If you have a reliable leverage ratio at your target sag, enter it here. Otherwise we use rear travel ÷ shock stroke. Target sag is measured at the shock, not the rear wheel.

These two estimates use different assumptions; they are not a guaranteed range or an average of other calculators. The manufacturer-method baseline does not promise your target sag. Bike weight, riding position, preload and the leverage curve can change the result. Confirm actual sag on the bike and follow your shock’s spring and preload guidance. A frame’s linkage name alone does not determine its leverage curve. A progressive coil may add bottom-out support on a suitable frame, but its actual spring curve and shock compatibility need checking.

How this estimate is checked

The baseline follows Cane Creek’s published weight × leverage method. For 185 lb, 150 mm travel and 55 mm stroke, it gives about 505 lb/in, close to their 500 lb/in example. FOX’s current calculator recommends 600 lb/in for those dimensions with its default settings. That difference remains unresolved; this beta has not been validated against measured sag.

We’re continually updating this directory using published manufacturer and industry information, along with Dirtlabs’ workshop experience. Specs can vary by frame version and shock. Confirm your exact fit before ordering; if you spot an error, please let Dirtlabs know.
