The internal mechanism or medium a suspension device that tempers the forces exerted between two points and provides lockout, compression damping, and rebound damping functions. In mountain bikes dampers are most often a cylindrical oil filled cartridge with valving through which oil is forced and through which a piston moves. The flow of fluid through ports and valving, which are opened and closed, controls compression and rebound characteristics. There is no such thing as a dampener.
